Butlins Skegness is a major holiday resort attracting nearly 500,000 staying visitors in it’s mix of catered, self-catered apartments and caravans with a further 70,000 day visitors.
In addition to the casino, Butlins propose to develop a 150 bedroom hotel of four-star standard, a bingo venue, cinema, restaurants and retailing, at a total cost of £20m (of which the hotel would account for £11m. These figures would be in addition to the current investment programme at the Resort, which is some £3m to £4m annually. Butlins have ample capital resources for a project of this kind.
Butlins emphasise their commitment to training and to the employment of local people. They work in partnership with Boston College and First College18 to deliver NVQ qualifications and plan to develop a Foundation Degree programme in due course. They have a track record of contracting for capital works and supplies with local companies.
Butlins see the casino proposals as an opportunity to change fundamentally the current public perceptions of the Coast in general, and their resort in particular.
